Homework Diners in Asheville and Buncombe County United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County launched Homework Diners in November, 2016.
Homework Diners At United Way, we know it takes a village to raise healthy, successful children. That’s why we are a proud member of The Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership, a collective strategy to transform schools into places where students, families, staff, and the surrounding community work together to ensure success for every student.

United Way is hoping to expand to the Owen District, if funding works out. According to United Way, 39 Homework Diners were held this year and more than 301 households attended (this includes all but the last week of Diners). Attendees came from 33 different schools, bringing in kids at all levels of K-12.
Nearly 8,000 meals were served at the 2018-19 Homework Diners. If you aren't already familiar, Homework Diners are a collaborative effort between United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools and a number of our Middle Grades Network Partners.
During the 2018-19 school year, the group held 87 Homework Diners with almost 1,500 students and their families in attendance. To put that in perspective: United Way served almost 8,000 meals during that time. While there, families can meet teachers and access community resources. Relationships are built and bellies are filled.
Homework Diners are weekly family engagement events that allow students and families to receive homework support from paid teachers and volunteer tutors.
Homework Diners are a dynamic, comprehensive strategy that surrounds students and their families with a continuum of coordinated supports including, tutoring, opportunities to build parent-teacher relationships, a free and nutritious meal, connections to community resources and workforce readiness.

United Way then responded to inquiries from people from all walks of life who wanted to help by opening the United for U.S. Fund on January 23. Every dollar that we have raised is being used by local United Ways serving furloughed workers and impacted individuals to support critical needs like food, energy assistance, utilities, rent, health care, and more.
The Virtual Reading Program uses a United Way-developed platform, Vello, to provide kids in grades 1-5 with a selection of books matched to their reading level in a learning program called Raz.
